Cooling & Heating
IMPROVING COOLING & HEATING
House of Subtle’s main and only heating source is natural gas running through
10 radiators on the property. The exterior components of the house are brick and updated 2-panel windows. All of the interior walls are plaster which creates an adequate insulation barrier.
The third floor known as “The Artist Residency” has two radiators where the valves were painted shut and the room was over a 10-degree temperature difference from the rest of the house. We added an expansion tank at the furnace, increased the water PSI to force more water to the top floor, and replaced the radiator valves. We also installed an access hatch in the ceiling and added R38 EcoBatt Kraft-Faced Fiberglass Insulation Batts in the ceiling joists under the gable roof.
Installing R38 insulation in the attic in the summer is a nasty job.

UPGRADING THE HEATING SYSTEM
We upgraded the heating system at the house by adding high-pressure valves to the furnace, cleaned the furnace, insulated all water pipes in the basement, and replaced all the radiator valves in the house so they open and close more efficiently and easily. We installed the Echobee3 Lite Smart Thermostat. This thermostat can save up to 23% on annual energy costs, is ENERGY STAR® Certified, runs off Wi-Fi, and has a back-up battery built-in, and you can control it with an app on IOS & Android systems.
Becoming more energy efficient lowers gas consumption, heating, and cooling costs overall! House of Subtle is now great at keeping cool in the summers and warm and toasty in the winters.
